Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Samsung Display sued Chinese company, BOE Technology. The reason is that the company that produced the LED screen was accused of infringing on five patents belonging to Samsung which were used for HP screens, including the iPhone 12.

Samsung’s lawsuit was filed in Texas. The South Korean chaebol asked the judge to force BOE to pay compensation for infringement of the OLED screen patent. In addition, Samsung asked the court to stop the import and sale of BOE production displays related to Samsung’s patents.

OLED screens are now widely used by premium HP, including Apple’s newest iPhone, namely the iPhone 14. According to Apple, OLED provides a higher resolution with a thinner screen.

Currently, Samsung Display is the leader in the OLED market, followed by BOE and LG Display.

In December, Samsung Display filed a patent infringement complaint by several companies selling OLED displays to the United States International Trade Commission.

The boss of Samsung Display, Choi Kwon-young in January was quoted Reuters stated that his company would seek to compel payment of compensation for the use of their intellectual property by other companies.

Samsung’s lawsuit marks a new chapter in the battle between South Korea and China in the electronics component industry. This is because South Korea’s position as a leader in the chip and screen manufacturing industry is increasingly being squeezed by China.

Last month, former officials at Samsung Electronics were charged with stealing company secrets for factories in China. South Korean prosecutors said the former Samsung employee’s actions “jeopardized national security.”
