SEOUL, Jan. 26 (Yonhap) – Samsung Display Co., a leading display screen manufacturer in South Korea, announced on Tuesday that it has developed a low-power organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display for smartphones.
—
The Samsung Electronics Co. subsidiary said the latest OLED display reduced power consumption by up to 16% compared to its previous smartphone displays. The new OLED display is already in use on Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra smartphone which launched earlier this month, she added.
—
OLED screens do not require an additional light source but produce colors thanks to an electric current which passes directly through self-illuminated organic materials.
—
Samsung Display explained that its newly developed organic material exhibits better light efficiency thanks to electrons moving faster and more easily through the organic layers of the screen.
—
Its latest technology means that OLED screens can emit brighter light but consume less electricity, improving the battery life of smartphones.
—
In addition, Samsung Display has indicated that it currently holds no less than 5,000 patents worldwide relating to OLED technologies. It has filed more than 370 patents related to organic OLED materials each year for the past three years, the company added.
