Samsung Shifts Focus: DeX for Windows to be Retired in 2025
Samsung is set to sunset its DeX for Windows application with the release of its OneUI 7 software update in 2025.
The move, announced on Samsung’s UK website, signals a strategic shift for the tech giant, directing users towards its "Phone Link" feature as a viable alternative.
"The DeX for PC on Windows OS will end support from One UI 7 version. We encourage customers to connect mobile phone and PC through the Link to Windows feature," Samsung stated.
DeX for Windows allowed smartphone users to dock their devices with a PC and transform the Windows environment into a Samsung DeX interface, essentially creating a desktop experience.
While Phone Link doesn’t mirror DeX’s functionality exactly, it offers a similar solution, enabling users to project their smartphone interface onto their computer screens and remotely run applications. The advantage: Phone Link is accessible wirelessly and supports various Android devices, not just Samsung ones.
This collaboration between Samsung and Microsoft brings Phone Link to the forefront, hinting at the possibility of future updates and enhancements.
One reason for Samsung’s decision, speculates Android Central, may be low user engagement with DeX for Windows.
Despite retiring DeX for Windows, Samsung’s DeX will continue to be available, but its focus will shift towards larger screen devices such as TVs and monitors.
This transition towards Phone Link also coincides with Samsung’s OneUI 7 update, which promises significant AI enhancements and user interface changes, as teased in a recent leak.
