A robbery of a warehouse in South Africa led Samsung to reveal a trump card it has up its sleeve: if it suspects stolen televisions, the South Korean technology can remotely disable the equipment. That is, criminals will have a useless product on their hands.
“Samsung South Africa has announced the implementation of a TV Lock Function on all Samsung TV equipment,” reads a statement. According to the company, this system will only be used in situations of theft, whether from Samsung’s own warehouses or from the homes of end consumers.
It is a solution that makes it possible to detect whether televisions have been turned on without proper authorization and which, in addition, guarantees that only full owners can have access, upon proof of purchase. “The objective of the technology is to mitigate the creation of parallel markets associated with the sale of illegal products, both in South Africa and abroad”, the company also indicates.
At the moment, the technology is already pre-installed in all Samsung television products. Once the stolen television is connected to the internet, the system is able to detect and disable it. If an equipment is wrongly blocked, just present the purchase receipt to solve the problem.
