Samsung announced today the output of the 980 NVMe SSD. This is the company’s first DRAM-free consumer record. Previously, these DRAM-less designs had a drawback in terms of speed (without the short-term available memory) for fast data access.

The Samsung 980 uses HMB (Host Memory Buffer) technology. It connects the drive directly to the DRAM of the host processor to overcome performance drawbacks. This technology is combined with the company’s latest sixth generation V-NAND along with an optimized controller and firmware. It enables the 980 to deliver NVMe performance six times faster than SATA SSDs. Sequential read and write speeds therefore reach up to 3500 and 3000 MB / s. Random read and write performance reaches 500K IOPS and 480K IOPS, respectively.

Samsung has also updated the Intelligent TurboWrite 2.0. It also offers significantly improved performance over the previous version. It allows a much larger buffer storage area to be allocated inside the drive. For users working with extremely large files or playing graphics rich games, the new “Full Power Mode” added to the Samsung Magician 6.3 software allows the player to run continuously at peak performance.

In addition, with Dynamic Thermal Guard technology, nickel-coated controllers and heat sinks available in Samsung’s premium 980 series, users can enjoy stable and reliable performance even with prolonged use.
The SSD also features improved energy efficiency of up to 56% over previous 970 EVOs.
The Samsung 980 SSD is available at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of 59.99 euros for the 250 GB and 79.99 euros for the 500 GB. It will cost 149.99 euros for the 1 TB.
