Samsung and Micron warn of the effects of restrictions in Xi’an on chip production

According to Micron, restrictions in Xi’an could disrupt the supply of DRAM chips. Samsung then said it would make temporary adjustments to operations at local NAND memory chips plants. According to analysts, Samsung supplies NAND chips from Xi’an mainly to Chinese customers.

Samsung’s memory chip production in Xi’an is one of the largest foreign projects in China. Samsung has two NAND chip production lines in the city. According to the analytical company TrendForce, they account for more than 40 percent of its total capacity for the production of these chips and more than 15 percent of its global capacity.

Roughly 13 million people in the city of Xi’an in northern China, famous for its huge terracotta army burial ground, have not been allowed to leave their homes since last Thursday. Until Monday, they could go out every three days to replenish supplies, but from this week, the authorities ordered them to stay at home. Exceptions are those who go for coronavirus tests.
