Sami Basso, the man who outlived any other patient with progeria syndrome, has died at the age of 28.
This is a rare syndrome that causes premature aging of the body. Doctors had told Basso’s parents that he would live to be thirteen at most.
They, however, immediately sought the help of scientists in Europe and especially in America, where research has made great progress.
Sami Basso, originally from the wider area of Vicenza, studied natural sciences and created a non-profit organization dedicated to the disease he suffered from, with the aim of raising awareness and informing citizens.
Five years ago he was honored by the Italian president of the republic, Sergio Mattarella, with the title of knight of the Italian republic.
“You may not be perfect, you don’t need to be perfect to do something. The important thing is to do, and it is never too late to do something”
