Yesterday’s ruling means that the 50 states in the US can individually determine whether they allow abortion or not. A majority of Republican states will choose to restrict or ban abortion.
‘Duty to correct mistakes’
Does same-sex marriage suffer the same fate? A ruling by one of the conservative judges of the Supreme Court does give reason to think so. He said after the abortion ruling that other decisions from the past, specifically aimed at privacy, contraception and same-sex marriage, should also be reconsidered.

“We have a duty to correct the mistakes that were made then,” he said. Organizations fighting for LGBTI rights are outraged. “We will never go back to the dark days of being locked out of hospitals and left out of obituaries,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO of GLAAD. to the Washington Post.
fear is great
Not that the court can decide next week to immediately delete other achievements, but the fear is certainly there. “I feel like this opens the door to making all our rights disappear,” 24-year-old Alyssa Klos told the American newspaper.
Correspondent Erik Mouthaan sees that the scrapping of abortion law will make a difference in the US. He tells more about it in the video below:

And even if it does not come to the point where the court will consider other rights, this decision could still have consequences. “For example, it could give lawmakers in conservative Mississippi the freedom to go further in their anti-LGBTI policies.”
no case yet
It is as yet unclear what the real chance is that gay rights will also be at risk. Reporter Sophie van der Meer states that there must first be a case. “The court cannot simply say that those rights also disappear.”

What is the probability that the right to same-sex marriage will disappear?
With yesterday’s ruling, the Supreme Court is actually saying: the reasoning of the 1973 lawsuit from which the abortion rights were derived is incorrect, this ruling is voided and now States are given the freedom to ban abortion.
Reporter Van der Meer: “This could also happen with the 2015 ruling that secured same-sex marriage. In that case, a lawsuit must first be submitted to the Court, whereby the nine judges must consider whether same-sex marriage is constitutionally protected.”
And you can. “It is quite possible that a conservative leader could pass a law that would go against the freedom of same-sex marriage, which could lead to a lawsuit. Previously we assumed it would be won by the same-sex marriage side.” defends, but that is no longer certain at all.”
How is that possible? Van der Meer: “The outspoken conservative judges, three of whom are appointed by Trump, have the majority in the Court.”

Meanwhile, the ruling on abortion in the US is causing major protests. In several cities people take to the streets and there are disturbances. In Phoenix, for example, hundreds of protesters stormed the Arizona State Legislature last night and caused damage. In New York, according to local media, 17,000 people took part in a tour through Manhattan. There were disturbances there. About 25 protesters have been arrested.
To move house
The consequences for women are huge. Women who later want an abortion and who live in a state where it has not been legalized have to travel far to be able to have the procedure performed. States that prohibit abortion themselves are now voting to also ban traveling to another state for surgery.
In the US itself, many women now stock up on abortion pills. In states where abortion will no longer be allowed, those pills could still be delivered, says Van der Meer. “That’s a subterfuge that’s being used a lot now.” You can see more about it in the video below:

There are also many voices on social media of people saying that they want to move abroad after the decision. Van der Meer says that abortion doctors, for example, will move if they live in a state where it is no longer allowed. They simply cannot do their job anymore.
