Sam Smith and Evolution: Saved by Music
In all aspects, personal and professional, we are before an artist who has completed a personality willing to offer his music breaking international barriers.
Thus, we could define what he has told in this interview in this interview with Zane Lowe in Apple Music 1. Therefore, it counts Smith There came a time when I said to myself: “I have to break this door down and I did it and for a while it was chaos, but now I feel like I’ve picked up the pace and I’m taking advantage of what I want to do. I have amazing artists around me, it’s like I’m becoming the artist of my dreams, it’s an amazing feeling, crazy“.
To reach this moment of international splendor, Sam recounts how his isolation in his Natar town was broken tenaciously. And it wasn’t easy because, as he points out, “I remember just being bullied at school and stuff, escaping to other places in my head. Even when it came to my career, the idea of being famous or well-known, or being a successful singer, was on my mind. It was like saying “fuck you” to the kids at school. I thought this is how I’m going to get my power back, my voice. And I fed him. That’s how I got here, in a way and I still do sometimes, but now I do it in a healthier way, because hope is a beautiful thing to take refuge in and the foundation of everything, fame was never what I really relied”.
So much so that Sam stresses that “It was the music and that has been what has saved me again in the last three or four years. I almost don’t believe myself that music manages to save me over and over againis incredible”.
In this vital evolution he speaks of “I have two sides, actually. My personal life and my public life. In my personal life, there is nothing negative, my family can communicate with me, they always have, but now they communicate with me even better. My love life has improved ., I feel adorable, I feel comfortable in my skin, I wear what I want to wear.”
In this talk he talks about the rawness from day to day: “On the street they verbally mistreat me more than ever. I think the hardest part was being at home in the UK and having people yell at me on the street. Someone spat on me in the street, it’s crazy. What seems hard to me is that if that happens to me that I am famous and I am a pop star, do you imagine what other kids feel, like queer kids? It is very sad that we are in 2023 and keep going. It’s exhausting, especially in England.”. Given this, talks about more freedom after his visit to the US: “It’s been crazy being in New York and Los Angeles, because I feel like I can dress up and be myself more in these cities than at home, because America is a complex place and it’s a wild feeling, I went to the White House and having Biden standing there saying all those things. I have not heard that in my own country from politicians“.
…and Ed Sheeran sent him a song
Among other things, he talks about Ed Sheeran saying that “IHe is a very special man, we have a beautiful friendship. In music, everything always has to happen organically for me. He sent me that song, the beginning of it, and I felt immediately awkward because I don’t do that. they don’t send me songs and then I sing on them unless it’s a collaboration. So it was an ego moment at first, kind of weird. If I wanted to do something, I wanted to write it with him from the beginning. But that was before I heard her, then I hit play and it was one of those moments.. I feel like I’ve done a good job on this record and I wanted to write an amazing pop record, I think I’ve written some amazing pop songs. But Ed and his ability to write music… it’s so beautiful. It’s very special. I had done about nine songs on the record that I was happy with and I said to myself, this is how I’m going to end the album. It is very beautiful and generous for me that I love this feeling of, I have done what I had to do, now I am going to step aside and that Ed Come help me do this and finish it with me.”
enthusiasm for the tour
The live performance is the ground that he prepares next and, of his international tour, he says that “It’s going to be beautiful, it’s going to be amazing. I’m going to put on a pop show theatrical As God commands, it’s going to be wild. Like Freddie Mercury/opera…Liberace, theater, theater, theater. That’s what I want to do. So I’m very excited about everything, I’m excited about the clothes“.
Jessie Reyez, a bet
Speaking of the Canadian artist, he highlighted that “Solo he written with guys and being in the studio with her, it showed me a way of talking through song that I hadn’t been shown before, it allowed me to talk about a lots of different emotions that why the other guys maybe didn’t feel too comfortable talking. For that, I am forever indebted to her. is incredible. I also think that she is one of the strongest talent in the industry what we have. I think his writing is great… It makes me think of Winehouse and some of the greatest songwriters of all time. I think it’s amazing“.
