Developer Skunkape Games has announced that Sam and Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered, the third installment in the Telltale series, is in the works.
Skunkape Games has announced Sam and Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered, an updated version of the third installment in Telltale Games’ Sam and Max series. It has been twelve years since the original release.
Sam and Max began life as characters created by Steve Purcell in their youth, and later made their public debut in a 1987 comic book series. The pair of self-critical, anthropomorphic private detectives later became the main characters of the classic LucasArts point-and-click adventure game Sam and Max Hit the Road, released in 1993 and considered one of the best games in the series. Thanks to the fame gained from Hit the Road, they received an animated series in 1997-1998, The Adventures of Sam and Max: Freelance Police. Almost ten years later, Telltale Games released the episodic game Sam and Max Save the World. Save the World received positive reviews early in Telltale Games’ history.
Telltale Games later produced two more seasons of Sam and Max, appearing in episodes of The Devil’s Playhouse in 2010. Skunkape Games are former developers of the series, and their name refers to a Devil’s Playhouse character, “General Skun- ka’pe”. Skunkape Games has since remastered the first two seasons of Sam & Max, and now they’ve announced that a third season is coming in 2023.
While the trailer doesn’t show much, it does go a long way in reintroducing some key locations and showcasing them in a much cleaner render with current-gen lighting. The trailer also does not announce which platforms the title will be available on, but given that the previous two remasters were also available on PC, PlayStation, Switch and Xbox. It is assumed that The Devil’s Playhouse will also be available on the same platforms. Hopefully Skunkape Games will confirm where the game will be playable soon.
Ten years on from the original releases of The Devil’s Playhouse and Sam and Max: Save the World Remastered, it’s nice to see “everyone’s favorite dog and bunny” getting that attention again. The success of Return To Monkey Island and Pentiment helped make 2022 a great year for adventure game fans, and The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered will fit perfectly into today’s gaming world. Perhaps the title will be successful enough to warrant a new outing for Sam and Max in the future, though for now, fans will likely be happy to see a remastered classic season.
Sam and Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered is currently in development.
