Salzburg vs Inter Match Review and Player Ratings: UEFA Champions League Round 4

The match between Salzburg and Inter, a match valid for the fourth matchday of the UEFA Champions League rounds, ended with a score of 0-1, the result of Lautaro Martinez’s decisive goal. The match was refereed by the Dutch Serdar Gözübüyük. With this result the Nerazzurri move up to 10 points in group D, sharing the lead with Real Sociedad and arithmetically qualifying for the round of 16 with two rounds to spare. This hasn’t happened at Inter since the 2004-05 season.

Below are the votes for the protagonists of the match to understand the progress of the match.

Salzburg’s report cards

Alexander SCHLAGER 6 – He takes a little risk on Asllani’s shot, then gets excited about Lautaro’s great shot. Displaced by “Toro” himself during the penalty.

Andreas ULMER 6 – As a good captain, he sets an example in terms of intensity and dedication right from the kick-off, but he doesn’t create many problems for the Nerazzurri and has to remain in the locker room due to a physical problem after a clash with Bisseck.

From the 46th minute Lucas GOURNA-DOUATH 5.5 – In the first leg he was a negative protagonist, today he enters with the right attitude but is lost in the distance. The talent is there, the performance peaks as well; however, it lacks continuity.

Strahinja PAVLOVIĆ 5.5 – Compared to the first leg, he does not dominate in the aerial duels and suffers from the technical qualities of the Sanchez-Thuram pair, but confirms that he is a truly interesting talent for the role.

Samson BAIDOO 5 – When Thuram targets him, it’s always pain for Salzburg. Compared to Pavlovic, a decidedly different impact and charisma (for now), even if he is a player born on March 31, 2004.

Amar DEDIĆ 6 – He pushes a lot, does his best in defense and rarely does anything wrong. In the home team’s defensive line he is undoubtedly the player with the best and most consistent performance, even against Thuram.

Oscar GLOUKH 5.5 – Devastating at San Siro, less brilliant tonight. He always shows interesting shots and phenomenal basic technique, yet he is not very precise in moments when he could embroider for his teammates or kick himself. (From 87′ Amankwah FORSON SV).

Nicolas CAPALDO 6 – Orderly and precise in the middle of the pitch, often helping his teammates in defense as well as being invaluable in sending Calhanoglu off-spin quite a bit (along with Bidstrup).

Mads BIDSTRUP 5.5 – 1st half of total presence, always in the thick of the action and also a factor in interdiction. He drops a little in the second half, but that wide arm in the box stains the evidence and brings him to tears after the final whistle.

Luka SUCIĆ 6 – Some plays from a number 10 of the past, but also a lot of inconstancy and too much frenzy when he could reflect and unload for his teammates, who in fact often tell him against everything.

Karim KONATÉ 6.5 – He starts like a rocket, pressing any opponent, at times he is truly overflowing, but he is also very, very imprecise in the last pass or in the decisive shot to make the most of everything else. (From 87′ Dorgeles NENE SV).

Roko ŠIMIĆ 6 – A match of total sacrifice and full availability, like the one in the first leg. He still lacks a bit of clarity, but he has to run and fight really hard. (From 79′ Petar RATKOV SV).

Coach Gerhard STRUBER 6 – His Salzburg does not earn a point due to individual inattention, but otherwise concedes very little to Inter and plays with great tactical maturity despite the very low average age of the squad. But now we have to earn the Europa League.

Inter’s report cards

Yann SOMMER 6.5 – Always attentive, reactive and precise even when called upon to manage with his feet. He won’t guarantee the same impact that Onana had in the Nerazzurri game, but he remains a gentleman goalkeeper and demonstrates it continuously.

Alessandro BASTONI 6.5 – He made practically no mistakes, dominating the duel with Simic and even making himself appreciated as an added attacker in certain phases of the last quarter of an hour. Well deserved captain’s armband.

Francesco ACERBI 6.5 – He starts with an error in the disengagement, neutralized by Sommer, then it’s the usual sentence. Granitic in duels with the entire opposing offensive front, he has been a point of reference for the coach and his teammates for some time now.

Yann Aurel BISSECK 6.5 – He starts with a lot of physical exuberance. Maybe a little too much, given that in the 27th minute he received a yellow card for a late challenge on Ulmer. However, he shows personality and skills, not just defensive, which will be invaluable in the long Inter season.

From the 45th minute Stefan De VRIJ 6.5 – Enters the pitch and Konaté’s exuberance suffers a clear setback. Precise in his advances and closures, bold but with the wisdom to offer himself to help the midfield in the possession phase.

Carlos AUGUSTO 5.5 – A performance that needs reviewing a bit. He risks pushing an opponent into the area following the development of a corner, suffers more than the others from the pressing that Salzburg implements every now and then and is imprecise even when he finds himself with the ball at his feet. (From 87′ Federico DIMARCO SV).

Henrikh MKHITARYAN 6.5 – As in the first leg, always at the heart of the Inter maneuver and often enlightening. Sensational player in both phases, tactical pivot in any module chosen by Inzaghi.

From the 69th minute Nicolò BARELLA 6.5 – He restores momentum and vitality to the Inter midfield, always being at the center of the maneuver and essentially causing the penalty that propels the Nerazzurri to the round of 16. Again fundamental.

Hakan CALHANOGLU 5 – Unlike Mkhitaryan, tonight he makes a lot of mistakes and doesn’t shine as usual. He unusually forces some plays, at the beginning of the second half he gets a “tactical” yellow and then is rightly replaced half an hour from the end.

From the 60th minute Kristjan ASLLANI 6 – Enters with the right attitude, then seems to disappear from the radar a bit. In the 77th minute the flick from the edge sends Schlager into crisis with a truly particular trajectory of the shot, but it is only an impromptu outburst.

Davide FRATTESI 6 – He makes a complete mistake in opening the scoring in the 43rd minute, when he could have opened the scoring, but he really improves a lot during the match. Always dynamic, valuable even when not in possession and very comfortable in prolonged dialogue with Darmian.

Matteo DARMIAN 6.5 – Perfect match, tactically and technically. He doesn’t do anything wrong, he finishes brilliantly on a Konaté thrown towards Sommer in the 60th minute and he also shows up often and willingly going forward.

Marcus THURAM 6.5 – Tears of pure athletic omnipotence, speed with the ball as always important but also a few too many ups and downs. Not very reactive from two steps on the development of a corner, although it was not easy to deflect into the net. He drives Salzburg crazy in the final.

Alexis SANCHEZ 6 – He touches few balls, it’s true, but he is as altruistic as he is precise towards any teammate. He sets up the potential 1-0, but Frattesi makes a mistake, then he is also lively in the second half.

From the 68th minute Lautaro MARTINEZ 7.5 – Enters and completely changes the face of Inter. Thorough striker when he hits the crossbar with his head, glacial on the penalty that earns him his 116th goal for the Nerazzurri. Close to 2-0 with amazing control. A player as strong as he is deadly.

Coach Simone INZAGHI 7 – He continues to manage the squad with wisdom, gets all the changes right and above all qualifies for the round of 16 with two rounds to spare. This hasn’t happened at Inter since the 2004-05 season: eighteen years ago. It should be enough?
