Eating schnitzel in a tavern is on average three euros more expensive in Salzburg than in the federal capital Vienna. This is a result of the Austria-wide schnitzel price comparison, for which OGM surveyed the prices of 1,300 schnitzel offers in the gastronomy in all nine federal states in June.
Accordingly, compared to Austria, a schnitzel is most expensive in the western federal states with a lot of tourism. Incidentally, a schnitzel in Vienna is on average three euros cheaper than in Salzburg. According to Statistics Austria, the currently high inflation has increased the price for breaded schnitzel in June by almost 11 percent compared to June 2021.
Large price differences across Austria
According to the OGM, the schnitzel comes to 12.46 euros on average across Austria. It is relatively cheap at an average of 12.10 euros in the federal capital Vienna. A larger range of restaurants and offers for students made the prices in the cities lower than in the country, said Johannes Klotz from OGM. In Graz, a schnitzel costs 11.20 euros on average, in Klagenfurt it is 11.90 euros.
The most expensive schnitzel are eaten in Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg, with OGM identifying the districts of Dornbirn (EUR 16.65), Bludenz (EUR 16) and Schwaz (EUR 15.50) as the front runners. The cheapest pork or chicken schnitzel with a side dish is in Jennersdorf in Burgenland (8.85 euros), in Eisenstadt (9.20 euros) and in Güssing (9.40 euros).
