EC Salzburg took over the lead in the ICE ice hockey league on Sunday. The defending champion celebrated a 6:3 home win against HCB Südtirol and is now two points ahead of the Pustertal Wölfen, who already lost 3:5 at Fehervar on Saturday. The Black Wings Linz beat the Vienna Capitals 5-2, the Graz 99ers won the home game against the KAC 3-2.
In the new edition of the ICE pre-season final, the guests from Bolzano took the lead through Brad McClure (18th), around two minutes later Salzburg hit back in the power play thanks to Peter Schneider. The home team also scored in the majority in the middle third through Ryan Murphy (21′), Troy Wayne Bourke (31′) and Adam Payerl (40′), with Christian Thomas (34′) scoring a goal for South Tyrol in between.
In the final period, Schneider increased Salzburg’s lead to 5-2 with Salzburg’s first goal at 5-on-5, but McClure’s second goal didn’t turn things around. Schneider was responsible for the final score, sending the disc into the empty goal (59th).
In Vienna, the Capitals made it 1-0 through Trevor Cheek (8th/PP), but then the game was dominated by Linz – Emilio Romig (19th), Matthew MacKenzie (33rd/PP), Shawn St. Amant (36./PP), Sean Collins (41.) and Graham Knott (59./EN) scored for the Black Wings. In between, Christof Kromp (45./PP) ensured cosmetic results. The weakened Viennese suffered their sixth defeat in a row.
The Graz 99ers fought a long, equal duel with the KAC; the decision came with a power play goal from Anthony Salinitri in the 59th minute. It was the first win of the season for the bottom team from Styria, and the fourth away defeat en suite for the KAC.
