Salzburg Mayor Harald Preuner (ÖVP) will retire from politics next year. The soon to be 64-year-old from Salzburg wants to remain in office until the local council and mayoral elections (probably in March). The People’s Party sent lawyer Florian Kreibich into the race as mayor and top candidate. Preuner has been a member of the Salzburg Municipal Council since 1999, has held government responsibilities since 2004 and has been mayor since 2017.
At a media interview today, Friday, Preuner gave two main reasons for his decision: On the one hand, his age – because if he were to compete again, he would be 70 years old at the end of this period, and it was always clear to him that not to remain mayor for long. And a withdrawal between the regular election dates would mean another election in between, which he doesn’t want anyone to expect. Secondly, he mentioned the professional ban with which he is occupied as mayor. For 20 years now, his wife has been running the joint driving school on her own, and the head of the driving school is retiring next year. Therefore, he will return to his company in 2024.
The still mayor also explained why his deputy Vbgm. Barbara Unterkofler will be the next candidate for mayor: She has three children at home and therefore always emphasizes that she likes to work and take on government responsibility, but never wants to be in first place because that can no longer be reconciled with the family situation. And club chairman Christoph Fuchs wants to continue to practice his profession in the Chamber of Commerce.
Therefore, the decision fell on Kreibich, whom he had known for a long time. The municipal council club, to which the lawyer has belonged for four years, unanimously nominated him at a meeting on Tuesday this week. Preuner announced a meeting of the party presidency for July, in which Kreibich would be formally nominated as mayoral candidate and appointed city party chairman.
