Salzburg Easter Festival cancel concert “Turandot”

Salzburg / Berlin (MH) – The Salzburg Easter Festival should take place again this year, but with a different program. The previously planned concert performance of Puccini’s opera “Turandot” will be replaced by a gala concert, the organizers announced on Tuesday. A total of four concerts by the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden are to take place from Good Friday to Easter Monday. Chief conductor Christian Thielemann is at the podium three times, and the British Sir Antonio Pappano once.

“We have been in coordination with the responsible authorities, as well as with the representatives of the shareholders, Governor Wilfried Haslauer and Mayor Harald Preuner,” said Artistic Director Nikolaus Bachler. There were some difficulties, such as sample options or entry requirements. One is confident that the program that has now been worked out can be performed.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Requiem” will be heard at the opening on April 2nd. On the following evenings, Denis Matsuev will interpret Edvard Grieg’s piano concerto and the violinist Hilary Hahn will interpret Mozart’s A major concerto. Anna Netrebko, Golda Schultz and Yusif Eyvazov will organize the final gala concert on April 5th.

The Easter Festival has been played by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic since 1967. After the orchestra withdrew in 2012, Thielemann and the Sächsische Staatskapelle took over Dresden. In 2020 the festival was canceled due to the corona pandemic.
