The new season of the Austrian Football League (AFL) started with a home win for the Danube Dragons. In Vienna-Donaufeld, the league veteran defeated the newcomer Salzburg Ducks 31:21 on Sunday and is now the first table leader.
The guests from the city of Mozart were still 21:14 ahead at half-time, but the Ducks failed to score after the break. The championship includes ten clubs this year, the Austrian Bowl will take place on July 30th in St. Pölten.
First Ducks home game in Salzburg
“I’m angry and incredibly proud at the same time,” said Ducks Deputy Chairwoman. Gerd Harlander. “Sad that we didn’t win and proud that this was the best performance ever by a newly promoted AFL team and the best performance by a Salzburg football team in the AFL since the 1980’s. We now know where we are and what we are capable of and we will build on that .”
The AFL’s first Ducks home game against the Graz Giants will take place on Saturday (2 p.m.) at the Max Aicher Stadium in Salzburg-Maxglan.
