The Altachers made life difficult for the guests before the break and also created chances, but Salzburg, coached on an interim basis by Florens Koch and Alexander Hauser, scored the opening goal. New signing Petar Ratkov headed in after a cross from Karim Konate on his Bundesliga debut to take the lead (34th).
Shortly after the break, his Serbian compatriot made the early decision in the game, Strahinja Pavlovic converted a corner kick from Maurits Kjaergaard (48th). The “Bulls” ruined coach Joachim Standfest’s debut on the Altach sidelines.
Koch and Hauser with a very young starting eleven
In front of 5,874 spectators, the previous Jaissle assistants Koch and Hauser fielded an eleven who were on average only 21.7 years old. Only five Salzburg starters from the last championship game in 2022/23 experienced the kick-off on the rain-soaked Altach lawn. The new acquisitions Alexander Schlager (goal), Aleksa Terzic (back left), Ratkov and returnee Nene Dorgeles were allowed to begin.
GEPA/Oliver Lerch Hauser and Koch were able to celebrate a victory at the start
This also has to do with the currently long list of injuries. Andreas Ulmer, Luka Sucic, Nicolas Capaldo, Fernando and Sekou Koita are among others currently recovering from injuries. Sturmtank Atdhe Nuhiu was stable on the bench for the time being. Noah Bischof was flanked in the center by Lukas Fadinger and Jan Jurcec. The ÖFB-U21 attacker should remain unlucky.
Altach initially offered a stand-up
Salzburg dictated the first half as expected, but lacked coordination and precision. Lucas Gourna-Douath found the first real chance after 25 minutes. The Frenchman headed a corner kick wide of Altach’s new goalie Dejan Stojanovic’s goal. The hosts were well organized, closed the center with great effort and even found the first opportunity. Fadinger almost surprised Schlager with a shot into the near post (20′).
Salzburg’s class showed itself after half an hour. While Bischof narrowly missed Schlager’s goal from the best position (32′), Ratkov jubilantly slid towards the corner flag two minutes later. Karim Konate, who dodged on the wing, found the head of the Serbian newcomer with his precise cross (34th). At this point in time, the favorite was not said to have playful brilliance, but rather merciless effectiveness.
Quick hit after a break
The Altachers, who were five years older on average, continued to have their moments. Schlager was there for a sly free kick from Fadinger (38′). In the subsequent corner kick, Constantin Reiner headed over the goal (39′). The guests made the preliminary decision quickly after the restart. After a corner kick from Maurits Kjaergaard, Pavlovic headed in with an amazing air position (48′). In terms of air sovereignty, Salzburg clearly set the tone that day. After that, the combinations became more fluid – and Altach faltered. Stojanovic saved his team from conceding a third goal against Ratkov (50′) and Konate (75′).
Standfest brought fresh offensive power with Gustavo Santos and Nuhiu. But not much should happen in front of ÖFB team goalie Schlager. Mads Bidstrup made his debut at Salzburg. The Dane was brought out of the Premier League to organize midfield instead of neo-Leipziger Nicolas Seiwald. Salzburg, who are now unbeaten in seven games against Altach, brought the game home without any problems. The champions will play their home game against WSG Tirol next Sunday (1:3 against Klagenfurt). Altach is a guest at Rapid on Saturday (1-1 against LASK).
Comments on the game:
Joachim Standfest (Altach coach): “We played a very good first half, did a lot of things right, put in good pinpricks. We concede a goal from a counterattack. Bitter was the second goal after a set piece. That knocked us out of rhythm. The faith was not gone, but the means were. It was a decent performance. If we can establish that as a standard, that we march like this, defend like that, attack like this, then we will have a good season.”
Christopher friend (Salzburg sporting director): “The start of the season is always a determination of where you are. I had a really good feeling beforehand because the last three weeks of preparation were really strong. It was really fun to watch the team today. Great joy of playing, they supported each other very well – the team is alive. That’s why I’m really proud of how the squad did it, because the circumstances were special. I think it was a really, really good away game and a great start.”
