In the past financial year 2023, more than 1.6 million passengers were recorded at Salzburg Airport. This corresponds to an increase of 31.3% compared to the previous year. At the same time, the increase of just 15.7% in flight movements shows that the aircraft to and from Salzburg were well utilized.
“I am pleased that we are once again approaching the traffic figures of the pre-crisis years. However, the catch-up process will not be completed until 2025 at the earliest,” explains Bettina Ganghofer, Managing Director of Salzburger Flughafen GmbH. If you “only” look at the second half of 2023 in terms of traffic figures, Salzburg Airport would have already reached 91.6% of the pre-crisis level.
High investments in the future
In total, the airport will have invested just over six million euros in the infrastructure in 2023. This included, among other things, new devices for checking baggage and the corresponding conversion of the baggage handling system, the installation of a biometric entry and exit system and a large-scale IT system for the automatic monitoring of the travel movements of third-country nationals at the external borders of the Schengen area.
In the next few years, the focus will be on the airport terminal, as all signals clearly indicate that its life cycle has been reached. “We want to create a modern, functional, energy-saving and future-proof terminal that not only meets passenger requirements but also meets all legal and structural requirements,” says Ganghofer.
First look at summer 2024
In addition to the classic city flights to Germany (Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Hamburg), London (Gatwick, Luton and Stansted) is also strongly represented in the coming summer flight schedule. Amsterdam and Belgrade will continue to be offered non-stop from Salzburg and from April Wizz Air will fly to Skopje and Bucharest three times a week.
Destinations worldwide can also be easily reached with just one stopover via the large international airport hubs such as Frankfurt, Istanbul and Dubai. The focus of the charter flights is Greece (Karpathos, Corfu, Heraklion, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Zakynthos and Kos).
Other summer destinations include Egypt (Hurghada), Mallorca, Ibiza, Corsica (Calvi), Sardinia (Olbia), Cyprus (Larnaca), Turkey (Antalya) and Calabria (Lamezia Terme). In addition, Tunisia is returning to the flight schedule: Nouvleair Tunisie is flying to Monastir until autumn. (red)
