From the province of Naples to Hollywood. Indeed, in Kansas City. There, in the 1950s, the new season of Fargo, a cult series produced by the Coen brothers, which in its fourth season – starting on Sky Atlantic and streaming on Now TV – has Salvatore Esposito among its protagonists. The ticket to one of the most popular titles in the world has arrived thanks to Gomorrah. «The first contacts from the United States date back to four years ago – explains the actor -: since then I have also had an American manager. When he called me to tell me they wanted me for FargoI was super excited about auditioning. Instead he said to me: “No, look they have already chosen you. They want you “.”

Since 2014, Genny Savastano – the ruthless boss of the series inspired by Saviano’s book – does not stop opening doors: «Doors, I would say. Every time I go abroad I have the proof: in the world Gomorrahit is compared to the greatest international series ». Here too, he plays the role of a powerful member of the underworld: «This season tells of the power struggle between African Americans and Italian Americans in those years. My character is among the most over the top, in a certain sense one of the most Farghian, with all those idiosyncrasies that the Coens love ». If there is one regret, it is not having been able to have a closer exchange with them, due to the pandemic. “Unfortunately it was all a bit distorted, too bad. But I can say that even with productions like these we Italians have nothing to envy … the means available change, which in the US are enormous compared to ours, but we compensate with creativity ». Of course, there “there is the cult of the actor’s profession, which exists less in Italy, as we can see in this moment of crisis. Now with Unita we are finally fighting to create a category, otherwise we actors are relegated to simple freelancers … but culture has an impact on society, it should be supported ».

It does not speak for him, to whom (professional) life does not stop smiling. “What I do is much more than I ever dreamed of. I started from the province of Naples and while living everything with absolute naturalness, I keep the hope that the children who follow me can benefit from it, understanding that dreams come true despite the difficulties, even if you are born in forgotten suburbs ». Yet also Fargoit seems to tell of individuals irreversibly marked by their own destinies. “But the sense of redemption is always a source of pride, and I say this also having some relatives who emigrated years ago to New Orleans … not even to say, they are very proud that I am in this project”. What was it like working alongside well-known actors around the world? “At first I felt a little embarrassed, then you realize that the more important they are, the more humble they are. Chris Rock is very nice, as is Jason Schwartzman, who is my brother in the show. After filming, we often went to the cinema together. One day, in a taxi, we were talking about a scene: “In the end how did you kill him?” He asked me. “I had to shoot him in the head” … only later did we realize that the driver was looking at us from the pale mirror. We explained to him that we were actors and not serial killers ». Although by now he has some experience with that role. “I don’t live in the terror of always playing the same character, I’ve never had this fear. I grew up with the films of Scorsese and Tarantino, for me, regardless of the role, it would be a huge pleasure to be able to work with them one day, or with actors like De Niro and Al Pacino ».

Is there a moral that you drew from the series? «That racism remains the scourge of our age and we have been carrying it with us for a century. Nations have taken away from culture, subjecting the majority of the population to an ignorance that leads to fear of the different, whether it is for the color of the skin, religion or sexual orientation. It will get worse and worse if those in charge feed discrimination rather than fight it. To do this, the weapons are art and culture ».
