Giving maximum effort in each event, the national parathletes who participated in the Xalapa 2024 World Para Athletics Grand Prix, in Mexico, raised the name of El Salvador by winning 13 medals and placing ninth in the overall medal table.
El Salvador’s harvest in the Grand Prix is made up of three gold medals, two silver and eight bronze medals. The most outstanding parathlete was Norma Salinas, an athlete from the Effort and Glory Program, obtaining two golds, in the 100 and 200 meter events, and a silver in the 400 meters, in the T37 class.
The second parathlete who achieved first place was Gerber Ayala, also from the Effort and Glory Program, in the long jump event and also a third place in the 100 meter dash, class T47. Javier Hernández won silver in the 100 and 400 meter dash, in the T47 class.
For their part, Lucía Quijada and Ever Cruz, also beneficiaries of the Effort and Glory Program, added bronzes to the Cuscatleca cause. Lucía won bronze in the 100 and 200 meters (class T35), while Cruz added one in the long jump and another in the 100 meters, in the T36 class.
Another of the paraathletes who took the podium was Sandra Flores. The national finished third in the 100, 200 and 400 meter events.
Ayala’s performance in the long jump (5.30 meters), which left him with a gold medal, left his coach, Mario Quintanilla, more than satisfied, as he was close to reaching the mark that would qualify him for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
“Gerber only competes in 100 and 200 meters, but for this competition he started training in the long jump, won a gold medal and was close to qualifying for Paris. Because it was his first time, he did perfect in that test, jumping 5.30 meters, and in his traditional tests he improved his mark,” explained the coach, who also added that the results of the entire Salvadoran delegation are outstanding and fill him with pride.
