Salvador Cienfuegos is already in New York, they report

The former Secretary of National Defense of Mexico, Salvador Cienfuegos, detained in the United States, who is accused of drug trafficking and money laundering, was transferred this Monday from Los Angeles to New York, after a judge denied granting him bail and anticipated that he would authorize him to be taken to that city.

The transfer occurs one day before the United States presidential elections, where President Donald Trump meets Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

By denying him bail, the magistrate Alexander F. Mackinnon he complied with a warning from federal prosecutors that there is a “significant risk” that he will escape to Mexico as he could be assisted by corrupt former Mexican officials and high-level traffickers with whom he worked closely.

He also ordered her to stay a few days in The Angels to meet with officials of the Consulate of Mexico in this city. The government of Mexico has refused to pay for his legal defense and only sent officers to the jail where he was to verify that the proper protocols were followed during his detention.

Cienfuegos was arrested on October 15 upon arrival at the Los Angeles airport (California) accused by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York of drug trafficking and money laundering.

The crimes, according to the accusation, were committed between 2015 and 2017, when Cienfuegos was in charge of the Secretariat of National Defense of Mexico.

The brief of the Prosecutor’s Office, signed by the head of the Eastern District of New York, Richard Donoghue, accuses Cienfuegos of being involved in the production, trafficking and distribution of 1,000 kilograms of marijuana, 500 grams or more of methamphetamine, 5 kilograms or more of cocaine and 1 kilograms of heroin.
