Circumstances of the murder
On the evening of November 8, 2023, Saltanat Nukenova and her friend went to a concert that took place in the Kazakhstan central concert hall. According to Bishimbayev, his wife wanted her husband to go there with her. After the concert, he and Saltanat went to the restaurant, where a quarrel began.

According to investigators, Bishimbayev attacked Saltanat in the restaurant lobby “a series of crushing blows” fists to the head. She fell to the floor, after which he began kicking her. Trying to escape, Saltanat hid in one of the restaurant’s VIP booths, but Bishimbayev knocked down the door and beat her again.
After beating his wife, Bishimbayev called the director of the restaurant, his cousin Bakhytzhan Baizhanov, and asked him to come. At the scene, Baizhanov saw Nukenova, who was lying unconscious and wheezing. There was blood and torn hair all around. Bishimbayev and Baizhanov lifted Nukenova and laid her on the sofa, but they did not call an ambulance. A few hours later the director of the establishment saw that she was dead,

Court hearings
The ex-minister’s case is being investigated under two articles of the Criminal Code: “Murder committed with extreme cruelty” and “Torture.” It is also worth noting that Bishimbayev’s brother, Bakhitzhan Baizhanov, is accused of concealing a crime and failing to report a reliably known serious crime.

The main trial in this case began on March 27 with a jury. As of April 4, the fourth hearing took place in the Astana capital court. It is interesting that in response to a clarifying question from his lawyer, Kuandyk Bishimbayev stated that he beat his wife “only with your palm”.

The ex-minister also said that he could not understand why his wife was losing her balance – from blows, or because she was drunk. At the last meeting, Bishimbayev talked about life with his murdered wife for almost five hours, but he never got to the murder episode. Then he asked the court to postpone the hearing of this episode to the next hearing, allegedly because he was “tired of talking.”

According to the ex-official, his wife Saltanat was nervous, aggressive, psychologically unstable, constantly tormented him with suspicions of infidelity and was jealous, and also abused alcoholic beverages.
