At least eight people have died in the United States and Canada due to a salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupe melons. Dozens of infections and hospital admissions have already been registered.
Five people have died in Canada. In the United States this concerns three people. In addition, 396 infections and 140 hospital admissions have been registered in both countries since October.
Health authorities link the salmonella outbreak to Malichita and Rudy brand cantaloupe melons. The number of infections is likely to continue to rise, because possible infections still have to be registered.
Salmonella bacteria can occur in many different types of food, such as animal products and fruit. It can take three days after eating contaminated food before someone actually becomes ill.
Patients may suffer from diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, headache and fever for up to a week. Not everyone develops complaints after an infection.
