Salmonella has been found on six western Finnish poultry farms, reports Maaseudun Tulevaisuus.
According to the magazine, Salmonella has spread from the same source during the transfer of birds.
Special expert of the Food Agency Tiia Tuupanen and unit manager Shirpa Kivirusu characterized the case as exceptional in the magazine.
– Salmonella occurs occasionally in Finland, mostly in isolated cases. Sometimes there are periods of several years when salmonella is not detected at all. The simultaneous presence of several facilities is exceptional and unfortunate, Kiviruusu says.
The cases came to light in September in connection with normal control measures.
Authorities have placed restrictions on infected premises. Birds or products that can further spread salmonella may not be moved from the farms.
– If the farm wants to continue poultry production, that means exterminating the birds, cleaning and disinfecting the premises, Tuupanen tells MT.
It is not known how many animals will have to be euthanized. According to Kiviruusu, salmonella infections pose no danger to consumers.
