Sally-Jane Van Horenbeeck Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Secrets from Thuis in Exclusive Podcast Episode

From the first episode of Thuis in 1995, Sally-Jane Van Horenbeeck played the role of Peggy, daughter of – then – hairdresser Rosa. Only in 2016 did she finally leave the program, after several breaks. So she has a lot to say in the latest episode of the podcast series De Thuisploeg, which was recorded with a live audience in Lamot, Mechelen.

Sally-Jane remembers how she was one of the first to be cast. “Home would not have become a daily soap at that time. That was a surprise,” she laughs. The series was to be the successor to Het pleintje and offer competition to Wittekerke on VTM.

Stunt woman

The actress talks about some memorable scenes in the podcast. For example, she once had to fall from a rearing horse that was startled by a motorcycle. Sally-Jane is a gifted rider and wanted to perform the stunt herself. She practiced several times at a riding school in Westerlo. “I had taught that horse to rear up so well that it continued to do so. Even when it wasn’t necessary,” she remembers.

On the day of the filming, Sally-Jane got scared. “I called my husband crying: I’m really a pussy, I don’t dare anymore. The owner of the riding school did it on my behalf. She then broke a few things…” Sander Gillis showed the scene to the audience in the Lamot. “You can clearly see that it’s not me,” the actress laughs. “She was at least ten kilos lighter than me!”

For fans who need a reminder: Peggy is pregnant with Tom for the second time at that time. The fall lands her in the hospital. There, ovarian cancer is diagnosed. She decides to have her ovaries removed and thus loses her child. Sander Gillis believes in the podcast that Peggy becomes blind due to the fall, but that is not correct. That happens later, during a carjacking.

Blind period

One scene with Peggy that Home fans will undoubtedly remember is the one where she kidnaps Lukas and steps into a lake with him. Nothing was feigned that day: Sally-Jane had a real baby in her arms. “The water was ice cold,” says the actress. “Plus, my character was blind at the time, so I wasn’t allowed to look where I was stepping. I was so afraid I would trip with a baby in my arms that wasn’t mine.”

That blind period left the actress with mostly dirty hands, she says. “I had to constantly hold the sets as a blind person. They are so dirty! Although we once had a very good cleaning lady who made the window of Rosa’s hair salon shine so brightly that it reflected in the camera. They then had to dirty everything again with sprays and the like. They now use that as an excuse for the dirty sets.”

The Northern Sun

Today Sally-Jane has a restaurant in Antwerp. For the decoration of SiamSally she was ‘inspired’ by the decor of the Noorderzon. “There is a chandelier that I took with me from the set,” the actress laughs. “And those cushions in the shape of a globe on our sofa?” she says to her son, who is sitting in the audience. “Also from the Noorderzon!” The iconic leather jacket that young Peggy always wore is also in Sally’s possession. “He has become a bit small,” she admits, laughing. “Shrunk in the wash!”

When asked whether she will ever return to the set of Thuis – with or without the items she took with her – Van Horenbeeck says: “Never say never.” The new episode of De Thuisploeg can be listened to on VRT MAX from Tuesday.
