Since 2004, the project to transform the Sallanches station into a multimodal transport hub has been in the works. To the point that local elected officials feared for a time that it was simply abandoned. But hope has returned and its realization seems to be off to a good start.
At the end of an agreement between the municipality, the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region and the SNCF, the latter has indeed agreed to release land belonging to it. Located on the other side of the tracks, this land with an area of 13,000 square meters now houses old rails dedicated to the transport of goods. To reach this agreement, studies amounting to 250,000 euros, funded equally by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the city of Sallanches and SNCF Gares & Connexions were carried out.
Major project
The need to redevelop the station has become urgent. It is already close to saturation, the pedestrian paths lack legibility, the maneuvers for the coaches are complex and not very secure for the pedestrians while the car park is saturated and without drop-off. In addition, the arrival of the Léman Express should considerably increase traffic from 720 travelers per day currently to 3,000 in 2030.
Now is the place for a large-scale project which plans to relocate the bus station, which will have six platforms, and to create a car park with 100 spaces. A wide footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists between the SNCF station and the bus station would be installed. At the same time, the current station would be renovated, the square would be redeveloped, while drop-off areas and bicycle parking would be created. The studies cost around 10 million euros for this work (excluding the cost of land). Work should begin in 2022 with delivery expected in 2025.
