In Russia, 32,499 new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were sold in January 2023, according to the Association of European Businesses (AEB). This figure is 63.1% less than in the same month last year.
Moreover, last month sales of new cars were significantly lower than December 2022. Then 64,072 cars were sold in the country. However, do not forget that in January there were long holidays, during which buying activity usually decreases.
In January, most of the companies included in the list of the most popular brands from the AEB showed a drop in sales. The main reason remains the same – the lack of cars from dealers. The exceptions were Chinese brands — Haval (+43%), Geely (+88%) and Great Wall (+321%).
The leader of the domestic market remains the domestic AvtoVAZ, which sold 17,468 new cars, which is 3% less than a year earlier. The Chinese Haval is in second place with 4535 cars sold (+43%). Geely closes the top three – the company’s sales increased by 88%, to 3501 units.
The fourth position is occupied by the commercial division of GAZ. For a month they were able to sell 1816 cars on our market. This figure is 32% less than in January 2022. Closes the top five Korean corporation Kia, which last month was able to sell 1415 cars (-89%).
As for individual models, in January the first place among the bestsellers was traditionally taken by Lada Granta. During the month, the Russians bought 11,905 of these cars. For example, a year ago 5526 Lada Granta were sold in our market. In second place is Lada Niva, which sold 4,950 copies against 2,555 SUVs a year earlier. The first three are closed by Geely Coolray cars (1865).
In fourth place is the most affordable crossover of the Chinese brand Haval called Jolion. For a month, the Russians bought 1523 of these cars. Chinese crossovers Geely Atlas Pro are on the fifth line. In January, 1173 such machines were sold on the Russian market.
