Sales of electric cars in the Czech Republic are growing. Year-on-year by two thirds

In the Czech Republic, sales of electric cars increased by two-thirds year-on-year in the second quarter. From April to the end of June, automakers sold 1,168 electric cars in the Czech Republic, compared to 706 electric cars in the same period last year. This is the sixth largest increase in the EU. This follows from current data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

While in the first half of last year the share of newly registered electric cars in new car sales was 1.1%, in the same period this year it increased to two percent. Overall, in the first half of the year, car manufacturers sold 1,953 electric cars in the country. On the other hand, sales of plug-in hybrids fell by almost a third to 1,566 cars.

“It is evident that even with the reduced availability of new cars, Czechs are slowly reassessing their skeptical attitude towards electric cars. It is also reflected in our numbers, in the first half of this year, the number of orders for battery electric cars increased fivefold compared to the previous year,” said the CEO of the leasing company, Arval Aleš Polák.

According to the Arval survey, in the last three years, the share of companies that use alternative drive vehicles in their fleets has increased by half. In 2020, 14% of companies used at least one type of car with alternative drives, this year it is 22%. Another 23% of companies are considering the introduction of more environmentally friendly cars into their company fleet.

According to the survey, plug-in hybrid cars are the most popular, currently used by every eighth company in the Czech Republic. Eight percent of companies use battery electric cars, 11% of companies are considering introducing them to their fleets within three years.

Sales of new passenger cars in the Czech Republic in the first half of this year fell by 12.3 percent year-on-year to 98,916 vehicles. The decline significantly deepened in the second quarter. Demand continues to exceed supply. Registrations also decreased in other categories of vehicles, with the exception of buses and motorcycles, the Association of Automobile Importers announced earlier.
