An evocative rescue of a sea turtle of the species Caretta-Caretta was carried out today by the men of the Coast Guard Port Authority Salernounder the command of the captain of the vessel Sirio Faè. The presence of the turtle was reported by telephone to the Coast Guard Operations Room, approximately 300 meters from the entrance to the port of Salerno, which promptly sent the CP 581 patrol boat to the scene. The specimen is approximately 30-35 years old and 100 years old. cm in length, was identified and freed by the crew of the Coast Guard unit from the artisanal and non-compliant fishing equipment called “Fad-Cannizzo” in which the specimen was entangled and promptly resumed swimming in freedom.
The non-regulatory fishing equipment was instead seized. The recovery activity carried out is part of the broader function of the Port Authority – Coast Guard to safeguard the marine environment and marine fauna, in particular, animals belonging to protected species like sea turtles which, especially due to interactions with human activities, risk suffering a drastic decline in our seas.
