The police of the station Roma Porta Portese, upon delegation from the Prosecutor’s Office, have notified, a Giugliano in Campaniaa precautionary custody order in prison against a 54-year-old man, seriously suspected of the crimes aggravated fraudresidential burglary, fraudulent use of credit cards and 4 cases of extortion against elderly peoplefor a total of nineteen episodes, which occurred in Rome from January to March 2023.
Furthermore, in Naples, a precautionary measure requiring residence was issued against a 25-year-old young man, for the crimes of aggravated fraud against the elderly, for a total of 42 episodes, which occurred in the provinces of Rome, Salerno, Napoli, Viterbo e Casertafrom January to July 2023. The measures, in both cases, were issued by the investigating judge of the Court of Rome. The investigations, started in January 2023 following the complaint of one of the victims, and concluded in September 2023, through the acquisition of telephone and electronic traffic data, bank investigations, telephone interception activities, acquisition of images of Video surveillance systems (both near the victims’ homes and the credit institutions where the withdrawals were made) allowed the investigators to collect serious circumstantial elements relating to the involvement and specific role of each of the suspects in the criminal episodes that occurred.
In particular, through a proven modus operandi, the suspects are suspected of having used various expedients including that of “fake nephew in financial difficulty due to unpaid payments or following a road accident“, of the “fake lawyer or law enforcement representative“. Thus, after having gained the trust and availability of the victims, all elderly people and often with pathologies and physical conditions that limited their ability to react and reject the scammers’ requests, they entered the house, having money and jewels delivered to them. The investigation, during which three arrests were carried out by the Carabinieri in flagrante delicto, all validated, and a search delegated by the Prosecutor’s Office at the home of one of the suspects, where telephone lists of various provinces were found and seized ‘Italy, mobile phones used to contact the victims as well as the sum of ten thousand euros in cash, made it possible to reconstruct and document an illicit turnover of approximately 500mila euro.
