A new safe and eco-sustainable hospital. It is the title of the resolution of the “Ruggi” University Company Salerno to authorize asbestos removal works at “from Procida” in view of the conversion of the old sanatorium in via Calenda into a “rehabilitation hub” and spinal unit, an intervention that will transform the facility into one of the most important centers in Southern Italy for the physical recovery of patients suffering from serious trauma. A first step, therefore, but a fundamental one: the structure – like other buildings built or which underwent various interventions over time between the 1960s and 1980s – contained asbestos, a resistant but dangerous material for health. The reclamation of the dangerous fibers was completed in mid-October after the service was entrusted to the company “BS Ecology” for just over 60 thousand euro: the workers removed the vinyl asbestos flooring, a rain pipe, a chimney, two asbestos cement flue pipes of over 2 thousand square meters which translate to 11 tons of dangerous material to be disposed of.
