It may be the fact that in this part of the city where you drink coffee at an “old-time” price or, probably also the strategic position, close to the bus terminal. And then there are the pitch and the church. The fact is that the kiosk in Via Vinciprova is frequented by an audience of Salerno residents ranging from the youngest to the elderly, with the addition of tourists arriving or leaving for Napoli and of Costa d’Amalfi. At any time of the day or evening you will find children accompanied by mothers or fathers attracted by the rides, there are the elderly and you can even hear people speaking in languages other than Italian.
And then there is a gentleman who, despite his appearance, spends days on the benches and notices. In short, the kiosk in via Vinciprova and the entire surrounding area are a sort of hub around which you meet and come into contact with a varied humanity that first and foremost makes up a densely populated neighbourhood. Despite this, there is no public toilet available. The owner of the kiosk would also have asked the Municipality for an intervention, also offering to guarantee sanitisation, but there was nothing to be done. With the result, as some citizens who frequent the area say, «that there is no shortage of cases in which flowerbeds are used as toilets». And so, to the overall degradation of the area with the crumbling football pitch and a construction site that has been open for months and is quite cumbersome, there is also a lack of services which especially penalizes older people. «With great availability the supermarket owner provides the keys to his bathroom, but it is not civil to continue like this». Among other things, beyond the lack of a public toilet, it is already a challenge to get to the kiosk considering that the sidewalks are all raised by the roots of the trees.
And if there are no public toilets in Via Vinciprova, the municipal toilets along the seafront are confirmed to be among the most unsafe and least controlled places in the area. Despite the sign warning of the presence of the video surveillance camera, a bit of everything happens down there: from solicitation to drug use. In recent days, among other things, a person suffered a robbery by a thug who blocked his exit and took away his wallet. «But she couldn’t find another bathroom…», was the comment that the victim of the robbery heard from one of the officers from the Salerno Police Headquarters who rushed to the scene. A statement which deeply offended the gentleman but which, above all, does not take into consideration the fact that tourists preferably walk along the seafront and, considering that it is available, they could also decide to use a public service which, like many other Italian cities, it is perfectly efficient. It would be better, at this point, to remove the camera signal and place a danger sign, considering that a different deterrent and control activity seems impossible.
