Alongside the themes linked to the more strictly spiritual and religious speculation and the events marked by liturgy and symbolism, during the days dedicated to the celebration of the patron saint San Matteo, there will also be a meeting that takes its cue from the fact that it is the two hundredth anniversary of the casting of the bell tower of the Cathedral. An appointment with experts and scholars (Monday 16 at 7 pm in the atrium of the Cathedral) that will end with listening to the eight bells that for centuries have marked the days and celebrations of the people of Salerno. A sort of homage to one of the symbols of the Cathedral that also appears as a sort of spotlight on the bell tower that – like the cloister – would need urgent structural renovation work. “There are funds available – confirms the parish priest of the Cathedral, Don Felice Moliterno – and we are confident that we will be able to intervene as soon as possible”. During a recent parliamentary question, the now former Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, confirmed that the resources earmarked for the Salerno Cathedral have been recovered and that the Superintendency offices are currently verifying the restyling project. Furthermore, as Archbishop Andrea Bellandi recalls, «interventions are also planned by the Campania Region, so there are all the conditions to first secure and then restore the bell tower and cloister to their beauty». In short, if the conditions of the place of worship, a symbol not only of the faith of the people of Salerno but also one of the most important testimonies of the history and culture of the city, are particularly critical and worrying, there is no lack of hope that action will be taken soon.
