Ten years after his passing, the memory of Giuseppe Soglia“The President” of Salernitanais alive not only among the fans of the Granata team. And today many have committed themselves to remembering his figure, not only in sport, who reached its peak in the 1989-1990 season with the promotion to Serie B of the Bersagliera – after 23 in Serie C – led on the pitch by another unforgettable player, the captain Agostino Di Bartolomeiand with mister on the bench Giancarlo Ansaloni.
Theshold – Don Peppino as everyone loved to call him, – he was praised above all for the recognized genuine passion that he showed on a daily basis both as a building contractor and as patron of the Ippocampus club of which he was the owner and “father” from April 1987 until March 5, 1991 when he resigned, still guaranteeing management until July of the same year when he sold his beloved Salernitana to a group attributable to Pasquale Casillo.
He belonged to a generation of men and women capable of contributing, with their determination, to the development of Italy and the land he loved so much. Castel San Giorgiowhere he was originally from, and Salerno were in his heart like the entire province of Salerno and anyone who approached him. A man of great generosity and enthusiasm which he also poured into the presidency of Salernitana. With him the Granata managed to reach the goal of the serie B at the end of an exhilarating season in the glorious Vestuti stadium before transfer to Arechi in whose construction Soglia himself played a decisive role.
Today is the tenth anniversary of his death and the family remembers Giuseppe Soglia with a Memorial named after him. The match will take place tomorrow at 3pm at the “Volpe” stadium in Salerno where they will take the field the youth teams of USSalernitana 1919 and Benevento calcio. The presentation will take place this morning at 10.30 am at the Marble Hall of the Municipality of Salerno. The meeting will also be an opportunity to remember Soglia through the words of family members, collaborators and friends. Speakers will include, among others: Marco Pecoraro Scanio, Claudio Virno Lamberti, Adolfo Gravagnuolo, Antonio Guariglia e Andrea De Simone. The meeting will be moderated by Murante Teethpress officer for Salernitana during the years of Soglia’s presidency. For the municipal administration, the mayor of Salerno will intervene, Vincenzo Napoli. The screening of archive images is planned by the “19 June 1919” Association chaired by Alessandro Nisivoccia.
The figure of Giuseppe Soglia, the President of Salernitana, is well outlined in the words of his son Gerardo in an interview in the past at Lira TV of which he was a guest last night: «The passion he had for Salernitana was superior to all the others in his life, there will hardly be a president with the same heart as him, he was born and died rooting for the Granata. Before the match he was always very tense even if he didn’t show it. He was unapproachable even for us relatives. I remember his first day as president, he had just been appointed and we were at Vestuti. I thought I could enter the stadium for free because I was his son. Instead he told me that I would be the first to have to buy the ticket. And so it was».
