The teams of “Saldus” and “Madona” / BJSS overcame the first round of “Užavas alus” Latvian Cup basketball on Friday. “Saldus” entered the first second round, which also defeated the “Tukums” / TSS unit in the second game, celebrating the victory with 82:54 (26:14, 23:12, 17:15, 16:13).
Kristers Ķeķis and Ivars Rihards Žvīgurs scored 12 points in favor of the winners, who also had nine rebounds, three assists and intercepted balls, as well as five errors. Three players scored 11 points at a time – Mareks Doroškevics, who also had eight errors, Eduards Horeliks, who also had seven rebounds, four intercepted balls and five errors, and Rihards Adiņš, who achieved a double-double with 14 rebounds. In the first fight in Tukums, the sweethearts won with 94:71. In the second round, they will meet with the Regional Basketball League team “Nīca” / “BLi”.
In the second duel in Madona, “Madona” / BJSS beat the unit of “Riga Stradiņš University” with 83:72 (24:19, 22:17, 12:19, 25:17). In the ranks of the winners, 22 points and six assists, as well as five mistakes went to Tomas Kohanovs, 20 points and ten rebounds were collected by Jānis Dumburs, and 18 points by Miks Kalniņš. Nils Baumeisters stood out with 21 points and four interceptions. In the first fight in Riga, the Madonians were superior with 85:82.
In the second round, the Madonians are waiting for a meeting with the “OC Limbaži” unit. The first second round battles will take place on October 1. Last year, after a 26-year break, the Latvian Basketball Cup was resumed, which was stopped in the autumn due to Covid-19 and did not resume later. This year, 21 teams from three leagues applied for the tournament. Four teams participated in the first round, but the Pafbet Latvian-Estonian Basketball League (LIBL) teams could meet in the fourth round. After successfully overcoming the third round, the next could be “Ventspils” – “Liepājas” and “Valmiera Glass” / ViA – “Ogre” duels. The “VEF Rīga” team starting in the international arena is immediately awarded a place in the semi-finals.
The final game is scheduled for February. “LEF Riga”, “Ventspils”, “Ogre”, “Liepāja”, “Valmiera Glass” / “Vidzeme University College” and “University of Latvia” will play in the Latvian Cup from LIBL. “Ramirent” National Basketball League will be represented by the following teams: “Jēkabpils”, “Jelgava”, “Gulbenes buki” / BJSS, “Limbaži”, RSU, “Saldus”, “Līvāni”, “Kandava” / “Anzāģe”, “Ķekava”, “VEF BA in Valka”, “Tukums” / TSS and “Talsi” teams.
Three teams of the Regional Basketball League also participate in the Cup: “Cēsis” / Cēsis Sports School, “Nīca” / ”BLi” and “Madona” / BJSS. The last time the Latvian Cup in basketball was won in 1994, when the trophy was won by SWH / “Brocēni”, winning the “Bonus” in the sum of two games.
