After unsuccessfully playing the middle part of the second half, the handball players of the Salaspils team in the Latvian Premier League tournament and the Ulbrokas Sports Club handball players in the Latvian First League championship suffered defeats in weekend matches .
The first two matches of the new year with the participation of Pieriga clubs had a fairly similar scenario: almost the entire match was a similar battle, but in both cases the teams had a fatal “hole” in the middle of the second half . Handball players “Salaspils” led 20:19 in the 43rd minute against handball club “Vaiňode”, but then conceded five goals in a row and finally suffered their tenth defeat – 23:26.
Krists Vidzis and Igors Ignatjevs each scored four goals for the Salaspilians, while Artūrs Kļaviņš scored eight, who commented to the press service of the Latvian Handball Federation: “The match was emotional. We showed that we can play equal with the opponent. The first half was really good. The second half lacks energy and precision. We have to unite, we have to go and fight with a free mind, because we have something to fight for, a difficult road ahead.”
Ulbroka sports club team visited first league leaders Skríveru and Aizkraukle’s club “S&A” and 20 minutes before the end they were leading 19:17. However, similarly to the people of Salaspils, they lost four goals in a row and ended up losing the whole game too – 25:30. Andris Lazda made 10 shots, Matīss Roberts Māzins eight.
With four wins in nine games and eight points, Ulbrok’s handball players are in fourth place in the first league table.
