King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Princess Beatrix will see significant increases in salaries next year. The Budget Day documents show that they receive a total of approximately 600,000 euros in salary and expense allowance.

According to the Government Information Service, they follow wage developments in the collective labor agreement for the central government. Wages rise because they are compensated for inflation.

The king’s annual income will therefore increase by about 55,000 euros to almost 1.1 million euros. His wife Máxima will gain 20,000 euros and will earn 431,000 euros next year. Princess Amalia is also entitled to a pay increase, but she voluntarily returns her allowance to the treasury until she graduates.

The Constitution states that the king, his successor, the abdicated monarch and their spouses do not pay wage or income tax. So they can keep their entire allowance.

Never climbed so fast before

The total costs for the Royal House will amount to more than 55 million euros next year, an increase of 11 percent. Costs have never risen so fast since Willem-Alexander came to the throne in 2013. Costs have also continued to rise in recent years, but by a lower percentage.

The current increase is mainly due to the so-called functional costs of the king, which will increase by 4.5 million euros next year. The budget of the Royal Household service will be structurally increased by 2.5 million euros “in connection with the sharply increased costs of ICT and information security”.

In addition to the salaries and allowances for the House of Orange, the so-called King’s budget also includes matters such as the maintenance of palaces and the Royal Stables. This involves approximately 245 full-time jobs, fifteen fewer than in previous years.
