Salary and contractual improvements, general demand underway for Labor Day

Mexico City. The Labor Day march took place amidst demands and proposals, including the improvement of contractual salaries, reduction of taxes, as well as labor rights of the Mexican labor sector.

But not only that, the reform to reduce the working day from 48 to 40 hours a week and the initiative to increase the bonus, postponed by the Legislature due to “pressure from the employers”, as well as the “absence” of labor issues in the projects of the three candidates for the Presidency, were some of the main reproaches from university workers, miners, pilots, flight attendants and telephone operators grouped in the National Union of Workers (UNT).

On the other hand, for the creation of the so-called Pension Fund for Wellbeing “they were approved without taking into account our opinion,” accused union organizations from the capital’s Zócalo, where they installed a booth and sound equipment, with a blanket in the background on which It read “For the Unity of the Workers.”

In contrast, the New Central of Workers (NCT) welcomed the reforms that have favored Mexican workers; However, he pointed out that “they have been insufficient to repair the damage caused by neoliberal policies,” such as democracy and union independence; the recovery of purchasing power and the resolution of previous and new labor conflicts such as the Taxco, Cananea and Sombrerete strikes.

Trade union organizations affiliated with this group proposed applying a “strong progressive tax on large fortunes” to reduce social inequality; suspend payment of public debt “to audit it,” as well as repair contractual salaries.

The leader of the Mining Union, Senator Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, called for the unity of workers and union organizations, while highlighting that 160 bills have been approved by the Senate of the Republic, as well as the publication of 15 constitutional reforms, “which are much more than those that were approved together during the seven previous governments.”

“We are on the eve of a political change in our country, and we have to all together demand that there is greater political will and commitment to meet the demands and needs of all the workers of Mexico. We have to do it together, because unity is what gives us the power and strength to transform things,” he indicated.

On the occasion, José Humberto Gual, general secretary of the Aviation Pilots Union Association (ASPA), pointed out that Mexico is experiencing a historic moment in the face of the electoral process that is underway, and warned that workers do not want speeches, but actions.

He pointed out that no candidate for the Presidency of the Republic has wanted to take the workers’ message, “from here today, May 1, we tell you that you are not going to deceive us with false promises, today we do want real commitments.”

On this date, he added, “it is our obligation to warn of the risks that come in this electoral process, it is our obligation to tell them to tell us well, we are not few and we will see each other at the polls.”

Among those attending were representatives of domestic workers, the Mexican Aviation Flight Attendants Union Association, and nuclear workers.

Some parents of the 43 normal students who disappeared in Iguala also attended, who in a brief message assured that they share the struggle with the farmers, housewives and democratic unions of the country that have organized to defend labor and social rights.

They warned that the fight for the disappearance of the 43 young people who disappeared in 2014 “will continue until there is truth and justice.”
