Saint-Malo: the heavy legacy of the Maritime History Museum – Saint-Malo

After a presentation of the budgetary orientations of the assistant to finances, Nicolas Belloir, the Maritime History Museum was invited in the debate of the municipal council on Thursday evening. If it sees the light of day, it will weigh heavily on the city’s finances.

Poisoned gift from the previous municipality? In any case, the new mayor believes in it: “We are doing everything to make this project a success.”

Around 27 to 30 M €

The City re-launched a call for tenders for the construction of the building. The companies will return their copy on March 18 and 19, the month when the State must announce the amount of its participation. The result of the call for tenders will be known in mid-April. If it is positive, the first stone would be laid in September.

The model of the Maritime History Museum.

To a questioning from Anne Le Gagne, from the opposition, the first city councilor recalled that the cost of construction of the building, estimated at 15 M €, rose to 18 M €, and the surroundings around 10 to 12 M €. To these amounts, it will be necessary to add a cost of 1 M € (instead of 3) for the construction of reserves, located in an activity zone.

“It will not be a simple hangar but we do not need architectural quality”, specifies Gilles Lurton, who figures the overall bill between 27 and 30 M €. As the museum is built on a sector belonging to the Region, the City will not be able to recover the VAT compensation fund, i.e. € 7 million.

“I show humility, but I fight”

The mayor estimates the cost of running a national museum at 3.5 M €, and not 1.5 M €, as mentioned under the former municipality. Another question that remains: that of the use of such equipment. 170,000

as already mentioned? Much more ? To try to see more clearly, an investigation was launched.

Gilles Lurton relies on departmental and regional councils to alleviate the “painful”. With each passage of ministers (Annick Girardin or Nathalie Elimas), Gilles Lurton is the pressing advocate of the case. “I show humility, but I fight.”

Recruitment for the museum’s curator will be launched in October.
