Children from Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, in Mauricie, made Christmas balls to bring a little joy to the children of Sainte-Justine hospital, touched by the story of their teacher, whose daughter is in remission for a year.
The decorations, installed on solute poles from the Charles-Bruneau Oncology Department, are hopeful.
“I didn’t know what it was like in the hospital. I wanted it to be in the Christmas spirit, ”said Anais Boulay, 9 years old.
“I am sad for them. But at the same time, I am happy to be healthy, ”said Albin Houle, 8 years old.
Students of 3e and 4e years were touched by the story of their teacher.
“My daughter has been in remission for a year in December, and the kids know about it. That’s why we’re talking about it. She is 9 years old, ”said Marie-Soleil Desaulniers.
She will spend a Christmas with her family this year, with her two children, after two years of treatment at Sainte-Justine Hospital.
“Beyond the fact that my daughter has been ill … It is not the only one, it will not be the last, there are more to come. I want the children to feel concerned, even if that doesn’t happen to them, ”continued the teacher.
Especially since, this year, Christmas is even less bright than usual in the hospital, due to COVID-19.
“Patients have to stay in their rooms more now. Of course, it’s more difficult on morale. These are all little thoughts that patients will come and store to recharge their batteries, ”said Marie-Pierre Bastien, head of the hematology-oncology unit at CHU Sainte-Justine.
