Sailors give Argentina its second medal in Paris 2024

Marseilles. Sailors Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco won a silver medal for Argentina in the mixed multihull (Nacra) sailing event on Thursday, the country’s second medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Argentine duo finished with 67 points, only behind the Italians Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti, who with 51 points took gold in the event held in Marseille. The bronze went to the New Zealanders Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson (80).

Sailing remains Argentina’s safest bet for the Olympic podium.

With the only exception of Tokyo 2020, sailors from the South American country have won medals consecutively since Atlanta 1996.

The last of these medals was a gold also in mixed multihull, at that time with Santiago Lange and Cecilia Carranza in the boat.

Sailing is the sport that has brought Argentina the second most medals in the history of the Olympic Games, with a total of eleven, only surpassed by boxing with 24.

This Thursday, Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco, both Olympic debutants and a sailing couple since 2017, won the eleventh Argentine sailing medal in the Marseille marina.

The Argentine duo finished in seventh place in the Medal Race, the last race in which the 10 best boats competed, but their good performance in the first series and the disqualification of the British John Gimson and Anna Burnet allowed them to finish in second place overall.

The British were disqualified from the Medal Race for starting early.

This silver is Argentina’s second medal in Paris 2024, after the gold won by José Torres in the BMX Freestyle event.
