Sailor Saved by Watch After Nearly 24 Hours in Water off Coast of New Zealand

The incident happened off the coast of New Zealand

A New Zealand sailor was saved by his watch after spending almost 24 hours in the water. The man used his accessory to signal by using the sun’s glare. During that time, a shark approached the distressed man and “sniffed” him, police said.

The man was fishing alone when a marlin caught on his line and fell into the water off the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. The currents dragged him and he was unable to return to his boat. He spent a whole cold night in the ocean. He was too exhausted to swim.

On Wednesday afternoon, three men fishing in the area noticed an unusual reflection in the water.

“They decided to look around and found another fisherman who was desperately trying to get their attention by using the reflection of the sun on his watch,” New Zealand police said.
