Saif Gaddafi banned from running in Libya’s presidential election next month. The second son of former dictator Muamar Gaddafi has been barred from participating by the Election Commission due to previous convictions.
Saif Gaddafi, 49, spent more than five years in prison for war crimes committed during the 2011 revolution against his father’s rule. In 2017, the Libyan government granted him an amnesty. The International Criminal Court wants to prosecute him for crimes against humanity.
Gaddafi, who was seen as the main candidate to succeed his father until 2011, announced a week and a half ago that he was nominee. He can still object to the decision of the electoral commission in the coming days.
General and interim prime minister
More controversial candidates will take part in the elections on 24 December. So made General Haftar announced last week that he is running for president. The warlord fought for years with his army against the government army.
Last year the parties reached a ceasefire and since then Libya has been split into two power blocs: the UN-recognized government and the territory controlled by Haftar. Haftar receives support from Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Russia, among others. The government has Turkey as its main ally.
Interim Prime Minister Dbeibah is also running for election. He is accused of corruption, among other things. He allegedly got to his post through bribery.
