Sagan knew he had to get started today to use the last water opportunity on the green jersey. The Slovak was also at the appointment and slipped into the leading group in the final. But stage win was not there.
“Today I tried everything to win and the team did its best to make that possible. When we left 30 kilometers from the finish, a group of 12 riders was formed. 4 teams were represented with 2 riders. That’s why. it was impossible for me to respond to all attacks. “
Sagan finally finished 9th, just behind Sam Bennett. The Irishman from Deceuninck-Quick Step ran out 3 points again, because he also took 1 point more than Sagan in the intermediate sprint.
Bennett now has 55 points more than Sagan in the points classification and 70 points can be earned in Paris. Sagan may therefore write an 8th green jersey on his stomach and therefore congratulates his competitor now.
“Congratulations to Sam Bennett for his green jersey. Once again we gave everything and I will do everything I can to win on the Champs-Élysées on Sunday.”

Sam Bennett kept a close eye on Sagan today and came out as the winner again. “It was a very tough day. I had to do everything I could to keep my lead over Sagan. We have adapted excellently with the team to every scenario.”
Yet Bennett does not think he is confident yet. “I have to arrive on time tomorrow and I think I will only feel confident after the intermediate sprint on Sunday.”
