The Hague mayor Jan van Zanen and his Rotterdam colleague Ahmed Aboutaleb fear huge traffic jams from Leiden to Breda if maintenance work on Rotterdam’s Van Brienenoord Bridge is not started soon.

The mayors say they need a hundred million euros to prevent traffic chaos in the region. In an urgent letter, the mayors write that lanes may have to be closed this year due to the risk of collapse.

The Van Brienenoord Bridge is more than half a century old and is in dire need of maintenance. However, Rijkswaterstaat decided at the end of January to postpone the maintenance work by four years. Mayors Van Zanen and Aboutaleb expect these postponed work to have consequences. According to them, the speed limit may have to be lowered this year and lanes may have to be closed to prevent the bridge from collapsing.
