The third departure from Rhein Fire’s championship squad is apparently perfect – and for the first time it affects a US import player: Koi Freeman says he is not returning to the European League of Football title winners.
The safety posted a highlight video of himself in an Instagram story and also announced his departure. “I would like to thank Rhein Fire for the opportunity. I love the organization and am grateful to have found new friends and brothers,” Freeman wrote. And further: “I am now a free agent and looking for new opportunities!”
All ELF players whose contracts have expired have been allowed to sign with new teams as free agents since November 1st. It is entirely possible that Freeman will sign with another ELF franchise in 2024, or perhaps somewhere else entirely – only time will tell. Theoretically, a return would of course still be possible, but apparently Fire Stand has now decided differently.
Freeman was signed in July and throughout last season to replace TJ Morrison, who suffered a serious knee injury. Just a few days after his arrival in Europe, the 25-year-old played in the victory in Paris and after that he was on the field as a safety alongside Omari Williams in every game. In eight appearances (including playoffs), Freeman recorded 37 tackles, one sack and one interception. He achieved the latter in the last quarter of the final against Stuttgart Surge.
Because Freeman doesn’t stay with Rhein Fire, the path would theoretically be clear ffor Morrison to return. Despite his injury, he remained with the team throughout the year. The question will be whether he will be fit again in time for the start of the season.
