Safety and awareness at end of year festivals

Colombian City Prepares for Holiday Season with Comprehensive Safety Plan

Valledupar, Colombia is gearing up for the holiday season with a proactive approach to ensuring safe and joyful celebrations for all. The "Happy Family Merry Christmas Plan," launched on Monday by the Valledupar Metropolitan Police, aims to address potential risks associated with the festive period while promoting a spirit of peace and togetherness.

The plan comes early, recognizing the importance of preparedness as the city anticipates increased activity and festivity. "It is known that, along with the lights, the hugs and the traditions, there are often also events that are painful for families and therefore require attention and general commitment in advance," said the authorities.

Recognizing the multifaceted nature of holiday safety, the plan will focus on several key areas. Cracking down on illegal fireworks usage, a longstanding tradition in Colombia that can result in serious injuries, is a top priority.

“From EL PILÓN we repeat the refusal we give every year to the use of gunpowder at this time because, although it is traditional, it is still one of the biggest sources of accidents. Education initiatives led by local authorities, schools, and the media must be strong in delivering the risks associated with them," the publication stated.

Additionally, the police will be working to prevent drunk driving, another prominent concern during the holidays, through increased patrols and awareness campaigns. Public transportation options and designated drivers are being promoted as safer alternatives.

The plan also emphasizes safer streets through increased police presence in residential and commercial areas, particularly during public events. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and take personal responsibility for their actions.

Already, city officials and community leaders are collaborating on strategies to encourage responsible celebrations. "It is the responsibility of parents to assist with monitoring and guidance, thereby helping to ensure that behavior is not normalized or justified which, although rooted in culture, may be harmful to children or the environment," stressed EL PILÓN.

With the holidays approaching, Valledupar is demonstrating a proactive approach to ensuring a safe and joyous season for all residents and visitors.
