The kickoff of the second stage of the Safe Summer Plan on the coastal edge of the Antofagasta region was led by the Regional Presidential Delegate of Antofagasta, Karen Behrens Navarrete, together with the Zone Chief (s) of the Carabineros, General Enrique Villarroel Valencia, the Maritime Governor (s) of Antofagasta, Frigate Captain Manuel Figueroa González and the Port Captain of Antofagasta, Commander Alfredo Acevedo Vera.
The operational deployments in the Antofagasta region consider the Hornitos and Juan López checkpoints, which are one of the places along the coast most visited by vacationers. At the same time, it will also impact the turnover of tourists in the summer, so the second stage of the Safe Summer Plan will be extended until February 29, 2024.
Regarding the Safe Summer Plan, the Regional Presidential Delegate, Karen Behrens Navarrete, assessed that as there is a greater number of vacationers’ transfers, resources for protecting the coast will increase, since it is one of the objectives of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security. reinforce this plan and added that “there are more than 28 million trips, and we also have a number of tourists that has increased by 17%, I am referring to foreign tourists. Therefore, the greater the number of people circulating along our coastline, our beaches, where Chileans mostly flock during this summer period to cool off from these high temperatures, it is also necessary to be able to contribute to greater security.”
Deployment of Carabineros
The inspection work is led by the Regional Presidential Delegation in coordination with the Carabineros, Navy and the General Directorate of the Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine (DIRECTEMAR). In this regard, the Regional Presidential Delegate mentioned that “the inspection carried out throughout the year is very robust and also includes the first stage of the Safe Summer Plan, which began on December 28 and we were also able to see a deployment of all forces, focused precisely on giving greater peace of mind and security to the neighbors.”
In turn, the Head of Zone (s) of Carabineros, General Enrique Villarroel Valencia, valued the results that the Institution obtained in the first part of this plan and indicated that “there was a strong work of identity controls, in two barracks that They are Hornitos and Juan López, where we could see arrests for incivility, there were also arrests for driving while intoxicated, which must be emphasized that there are some behaviors that should be corrected by citizens. And on the other hand, we have many arrests carried out on people who have a current arrest warrant. These preventive services are going to be extended throughout this month and are intended to ensure that citizens move around peacefully, enjoying their vacations and improving, of course, the perception of security.”
Maritime Inspection
The work of the Chilean Navy is also essential by having permanent patrols deployed from El Loa to Taltal, this with the aim of providing more security to citizens so they can go calmly to the coastline during the summer season. In this regard, the Maritime Governor(s) of Antofagasta, Captain Manuel Figueroa González, called for self-care in the population and expressed that “we must always respect the sea, the sea is our friend, but at the same time it is respect, if the flags prohibiting swimming are always up, the red flag, do not enter the water, always respect the instructions given by the lifeguards or the different concessions or the beaches that we have along the coastline and that is why “We’re not going to have a big problem.”
Finally, the Captain of the Port of Antofagasta, Commander Alfredo Acevedo Vera, reported that “the Maritime Police is mainly oriented to be able to provide a safe environment to the people who attend the coastal edge and also to protect human life at sea, which It is something very important for people who go to the beaches. Also, we were committed to being able to protect the coastal edge of Antofagasta, this is how we see more than 660 citations issued for vehicles entering beach lands, this is very important, since it is a permanent task that we must reinforce to protect the edge coastal zone of greater damage with the income of vehicles.”
The authorities call for the responsible use of emergency numbers, these can be used in any incident and are permanently enabled to resort to if citizens need it.
