Sadly, Peter Lundgren has passed away.

Sadly, Peter Lundgren has passed away.

As a notable figure in professional tennis who hailed from the prestigious Swedish era, and who later guided tennis legend Roger Federer to his first Wimbledon victory: sadly, Peter Lundgren is retiring at the tender age of 59. The newspaper “Aftonbladet” reported that Lundgren had battled diabetes his entire life.

The renowned Swedish ATP tennis player and tenacious tennis coach made history by helping a young Federer win his first Grand Slam crown in 2003. The Swedish Tennis Association confirmed Lundgren’s death on Instagram, along with statements from his children Lukas and Julia on Facebook.

Although Lundgren was overshadowed by his renowned compatriots Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg in the 1980s, he managed to reach a career-high ranking of 25 in 1987 and win three ATP tournaments. His remarkable career was capped by heartbreaking tournament final defeats to Boris Becker in Stockholm in 1988 and Indianapolis in 1990. In doubles, Lundgren reached the Australian Open final with Jeremy Bates in ’88.

Lundgren made a name for himself as an enigmatic and somewhat eccentric coach. His many protégés included Marcelo Rios, Marat Safin, Stan Wawrinka, Grigor Dimitrov and Marcos Baghdatis.

“Peter Lundgren was an extraordinary individual with a huge heart and a great sense of humor,” Swedish tennis legend Björn Borg shared with Sportbladet. Lundgren was also “a very close friend,” Borg revealed. “He was loved by all. His absence will be deeply felt in the tennis community.”

According to “Aftonbladet”, Lundgren had been battling diabetes for a long time. Last year, an unfortunate infection required the amputation of his foot. “Goodbye, dad,” Lukas Lundgren wrote on Facebook. “One of the best has unfortunately left us much too early.”

Lundgren, the respected Swedish tennis coach, played a significant role in Federer’s historic Wimbledon victory in 2003. Despite his remarkable career and impact as a coach, Lundgren’s health problems eventually caught up with him, as reported by “Aftonbladet”, where it was mentioned that he had been battling diabetes for a long time.
