The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, refused the request of the Ukrainian side to transfer to it cars that were subject to disposal due to non-compliance with UK environmental standards.
According to the newspaper The Daily Telegraphthe corresponding request was stated in a letter from the mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschkowhich he sent to his English colleague.
In his response, Khan refused the request, citing the fact that his powers were limited by the Greater London Administration Act of 1999.
According to the law, any government initiatives must benefit London residents “from an economic, social or environmental point of view,” and sending cars to Kyiv contradicts this.
A representative of the London mayor’s office explained to the publication that, despite the solidarity of the authorities with Ukraine, it is impossible to change the conditions of the car recycling program for the sake of export.
Let us remember that Sadiq Khan tripled the area of the ultra-low emission zone in the summer. Residents must pay £12.50 per day if using a vehicle that does not comply with the regulations.
Inside the zone, it is allowed to use cars with a diesel engine of at least Euro 6 standard. For gasoline vehicles, engines are not lower than Euro-3 standard. Owners of non-compliant cars can receive £2,000 to scrap their car.
As reported EADailyIn October, London Mayor Sadiq Khan told PoliticsJOE that the threat to the capital’s public transport system was a “real concern”.
